Arc of Becoming 2026

Arc of Becoming invites the viewer into the raw interior motion of change. Through sweeping marks, layered shadows and bold strokes of ink, each artwork explores the places where form begins to take shape — not yet defined, not yet complete, but undeniably moving forward.

Artist Journal — Butterflies: The Metaphor

As with all my art practice, this work began quietly and playfully — rough sketches in my sketchbook, allowing ideas to emerge before committing to a full collection for this Spring’s Art Exhibition.  I explored butterflies, cocoons, caterpillars, and wings through drawing and mixed media. Using a combination of inks, soft pastels, oil pastels, and charcoal, I allowed each stage of transformation to take form on the page. This part of the process was playful and expressive — a joy in itself.

The Plan

For the butterfly forms, I chose to work with clay, a medium I hadn’t used before. I must admit, I thoroughly enjoyed the process. There was something grounding about rolling out the clay, pressing in the butterfly cutters, and then moving into the painting stage. Working with my hands in this way felt slow, intentional, and surprisingly freeing.

To add to the joy of this piece, I went beachcombing for driftwood. After a rough storm over the Christmas holidays, and I found pieces of wood that felt just perfect for this project — weathered, marked by time, and full of quiet stories.

The Garden - Emergence

Emergence is not sudden flight.
It begins unseen.

In Genesis 12:1, when God speaks to Abraham, the first words are “Go, (to you).”
An invitation not simply to move location, but to move inward — toward the self he could not reach on his own. In that moment, Abraham is not asked to become someone else, but to step into who he was always becoming. The call itself creates the capacity to respond.

The butterfly carries this same truth.

Before colour, before wings, there is concealment. A season of enclosure. What looks like stillness is in fact profound internal change. The caterpillar does not strive to become a butterfly; it surrenders to the process of transformation already at work within it.

Emergence, then, is not self-made.
It is called forth.

Like Abraham, the butterfly crosses a threshold not by force, but by obedience to an inner unfolding. It moves beyond its former limits, into a form it could never have achieved by effort alone.

Within Arc of Becoming, the butterfly becomes a metaphor for this sacred transition — the movement from what has sustained us, into what will now carry us. A reminder that becoming is often preceded by unknowing, by waiting, by trust.

To emerge is to answer a call.
To go — not away from ourselves —
but to ourselves.

Arc of Becoming

Transition sounds exciting — the promise of movement, a great adventure waiting just beyond the familiar. Yet transition is not always chosen. Sometimes it is forced upon us, arriving without warning, without permission. How, then, are we to respond?

In certain moments there is no time to prepare. Circumstances demand immediacy. Decisions are made in the midst of uncertainty, while the ground beneath us is still shifting. Whatever the reason for transition — whether welcomed or resisted — it moves us. It dislodges us. It propels us forward into a new space.

This exhibition is about that movement.
About crossing thresholds.
About entering new territory before we feel ready.

Arc of Becoming explores transition as a lived experience — the tension between what was and what is emerging. Whether we step forward willingly or are carried by circumstance, change is already happening. The arc is already in motion.

This work invites you to pause within that space of becoming — to notice what is forming, what is being released, and what might yet take shape.
